Albia Community
Located
in the rolling hills of Monroe County, Albia is just 65 miles south of
Des Moines. This bustling community has been restored to its historic
beauty. A living architectural museum, the 92 building business
district, courthouse, and several homes can be found on the National
Register of Historic Places. Each August, to celebrate this
accomplishment Albia Restoration Days is held. Other festivities include Cruzin' Albia and the Christmas Victorian Stroll.
Held the fourth weekend in June, Cruzin' Albia 50's
and 60's Celebration features midway attractions, music performed by
local artists, food, and of course - cruisers gathered around the
square. The Christmas Victorian Stroll boasts 50 storefront
windows displaying Living Christmas cards. There are street characters
in period costumes, carolers, carriage rides around the decorated
square, and luminaries to light your path. To top it all off,
hospitality centers are available to serve you homemade cookies, coffee,
and hot chocolate. This popular event is held the first Saturday in
December.
Wildlife
including bald eagles, white tailed deer, and wild turkey, abound in
the many recreational areas that can be found in this Southern Iowa
community. Iowa's largest lake, Lake Rathbun, is just 15 minutes
south of Albia and includes 34,000 acres of public land and water.
Camping, recreation areas and a bike trail can be located at the
Albia Reservoir, a 55-acre fishing reservoir, and at Lake Miami, a
state-owned fishing lake. Tennis courts, ball diamonds, and park
equipment can be found at the Monroe County Sports Complex. For more information
